About Joey

Joseph Anthony Dente Jr.
“Joey”
Born October 13th 1982 - Died June 28th 1993

Joey was diagnosed with a very rare immune deficiency, Chronic Granulomatous Disease at 6 months old. C.G.D. causes the body to encapsulate rather that fight certain types of infection, so from time to time Joey needed to have 1 to 2 week hospital stays so he could be given intravenous antibiotics. Joey lived each and every day of his short life to the fullest. If a hospital stay was required he accepted it. Instead of dwelling on his own pain and discomfort, he could always be found checking on the other children, making them laugh, helping with a push or even an explanation of a treatment he was familiar with. You could always find him in the children’s playroom at the hospital either playing board games or putting together the latest gadget. Joey never gave up hope. His strength, wisdom and faith enabled him to get up every day and make the best of whatever that day had to offer.

Joey’s Friends Too is an organization that came about after Joey’s death. Our wish is to help all the children “Connect Their Stars with Rainbows”. It’s main focus is to put a smile on the faces of ill children.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that
and someone believed it,
and look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing?
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me."

NORA

Nora is one of Joey’s Friends Too that we helped in 2016 when she was just seven years old! With our help, Freedom Concepts was able to create a personalized adaptive bike to meet Nora’s sensory and physical needs, while allowing her to ride a bike alongside her brother and father.

NICHOLAS

Nicholas is a 15 year old young man who was in need of a wheelchair mount to help make his daily life a little easier. He relies on using only his left hand for movement of his wheelchair and communicating on his laptop. Joey’s Friends Too was more than happy to help Nicholas and his family by purchasing him a wheelchair mount to help him both academically and socially, while obtaining a sense of independence and pride.

LUCIANA

Luciana is a beautiful 14 year old girl who we met and helped back in 2017. While Luciana faces a life with multiple disabilities, she does it with a smile on her face and so much strength and support behind her. Luciana needed a Freedom Concepts bike for both physical and occupational therapy and Joey’s Friends Too was happy to be able to provide it.

LOUIE

Joey’s Friends Too had the pleasure of meeting Louie back in 2017 when he was just 4 years old! Louie has by far the biggest and silliest personality of any 4 year old we have ever met. Since Louie works so hard with all of his therapists they thought an adaptive bike would help him reach his goals, mom and dad agreed and that is where Joey’s Friends came in to help.

JASTINY

While at a Special Needs Expo back in 2015, we bumped into Jastiny’s family and the stars were aligned. Jastiny’s mom had mentioned that at school her physical and occupational therapists had her working on a mobility bike. Jastiny, being able to have her own bike at home, would not only allow her to build up her strength and coordination needs, but more importantly allow her to ride a bike alongside her brother and sister which she so badly wanted to do.

ANTWAYNE

Antwayne is one of our international friends, hailing from Jamaica, but now residing in New York City. Antwayne came here for better medical care after having his leg amputated back in Jamaica in hopes of stopping his rare form of cancer from spreading. The motorized scooter we purchased for him gave him and his family the ability to maneuver around their new city. The mobilized scooter also allows him to feel more independent in this new world of his.
